-How Much Does It Cost?-
The
Birth
According to the Health Insurance Association of America, the
average bill for doctors’ fees and hospital charges runs around
$6,400 for a normal delivery and roughly $10,600 for a cesarean
section. This does not count prenatal doctor’s visits or tests.
This is why insurance is very important, so make sure to do your
best to get covered somehow.
Raising Your Child
According to government estimates, the average middle-income
family will spend roughly $10,000 on child-related expenses in
their baby’s first two years of life ($8,000 for a second child),
and some experts suggest that figure may be too low.
You can count on spending at a minimum of $25 a week ($1,250 per
year) on diapers, formula, and baby food alone. You'll also spend
money on items such as furniture, equipment, clothes, childcare if
you’re returning to work, medical expenses and more.
Experts suggest spending money on top-of-the-line products like
cribs, strollers and car seats, but saving money by borrowing or
going to garage sales for secondhand items like clothing,
equipment and blankets. You can also save money on formula by
breastfeeding your child (which is considered the best nutrition
through the first year anyway!) |
